Greetings! It is with great anticipation and pleasure that the Board of Directors sends out this newsletter. The chapter has been a bit quiet this year in regards to meetings; it is because the Board of Directors has been conferring regularly on how to approach the continuation of the chapter amidst obligatory costs and falling revenue. Please take a few minutes to read about the evolution of the direction we have chosen.
Come join us for a holiday gathering on Wednesday, December 20th 5:30-9 pm at the Oakland Marriott (12th Street BART). We will meet in the second floor lounge, Iron and Oak. There will be a no-host bar and we ask for a $10 contribution to defray the costs of the appetizers.
Please RSVP to Robin Spencer by Monday noon, December 18th ([email protected]).
At the annual business meeting in September, the following slate was approved for the Board of Directors:
President: Robin Spencer, CHMM
Vice President: Lana Spencer, CHMM
Treasurer: Georgina Dannatt, CHMM
Chief Technology Officer: Michael Kumpf, CHMM
As-needed Volunteers: Martin Bermudez, CHMM; Bart Miller, CHMM; John Wolf, CHMM
Immediate Past President: Michael Kumpf, CHMM
We thank Michael Kumpf for his strong leadership and guidance as President for the past year.
You may be aware that our chapter is the sole AHMP chapter without dues-paying members. Because our annual base expenses are about $3300/year (!!) and the EHMM revenue has declined, we have decided to become an official membership organization. Effective January 1, 2018, dues of $30/year will be requested to become a member and to stay on the mailing list. The dues are designed to cover the basic operating expenses of the chapter. The obligatory NCC-AHMP annual expenses include:
website hosting and maintenance; credit card processing; Directors and Officers Insurance; and General Liability Insurance.
We are discussing joint hosting of a California CHMM website and perhaps a regional meeting with the Pacific Southwest Chapter. The AHMP Ambassador-at-Large, Richard Cartwright, is proposing a Region 9 affiliation: Arizona, Nevada, California, Hawaii.
What do you think of this?
The national conference is in our back yard! We are super-excited to be part of the planning teams. We welcome all early suggestions and recommendations for speakers, excursions, and community events. Let’s make our mark on the national stage in the Biggest Little City in the World!
If you’ve wondered about attending the national conference, this is the time. Hotel rooms at the Grand Sierra are $139/night and it’s on the way to Burning Man. A returning feature will be a student poster session. Come see how exciting it is with 500+ other hazardous materials professionals!!!! There is always a discount of $100 for the conference registration if you present a paper. Look for the Call for Abstracts coming soon.
Mark your calendars and invite your colleagues! Republic Services has agreed to offer their training classroom near Hilltop Mall in Richmond for up to 30 students.
We are changing the format this year and are presenting the indefatigable and seasoned team of Richard Cartwright, CHMM and Jamine Merkle, CHMM to instruct the 3-day course. In addition, the course will be structured so that people can attend for 1, 2, or 3 days:
CHMM preparation: 3 days
CHMP preparation: 2 days
HAZWOPER 8-hr refresher: 1 day
The CHMM, CHMP, and CDGP credentials are ANSI, ISO, and CESB-certified and held in high regard nationally and internationally. Wisconsin just passed a credential-protection bill with CHMM, CHMP, and CDGP written in and Florida is on the path. IHMM has just signed a 2-year agreement to present the DGCP training and test in China. Ours ARE the premium professional credentials for hazardous materials professionals. We ask for your endorsement and support of the profession by becoming a member of the Northern California Chapter of the Association of Hazardous Materials Professionals. And, we ask you to promote the certifications with your colleagues, clients and regulators. More info: see IHMM.org.
See you Wednesday, December 20th in Oakland, home of the Golden State Warriors
(the Marriott is their practice facility)!!
